Archatrak Chicago Navy Pier Offshore Rooftop Deck Pavers Outdoor Guest Sitting Area | Archatrak

Chicago Navy Pier Rooftop Venue

Since no test methods or standards currently exist specifically concerning porcelain pavers on elevated decks or rooftops, Archatrak commissioned the Florida International University Wall of Wind facility to investigate the wind speed at which blowoff of 3/4″ thick 24″ x 24″ porcelain pavers and 24″ x 24″ structural Ipe wood deck tiles would occur. A test bed was constructed with a 12″ high parapet to simulate typical rooftop deck installations. The test results recorded that blowoff of pavers occurred at the following wind speeds and conditions: • Ipe tiles with 12” high parapet, 0° wind angle, 8” high pedestals – 130 mph • porcelain pavers with 0” parapet, 45° wind angle, 8” high pedestals – 90 mph • porcelain pavers with 12” parapet, 30° or 45° wind angle, ½” high support pads – 130 mph • porcelain pavers with 12” parapet, 30° or 45° wind angle, 8” high pedestals – 110 mph
